    The Six Things That Actually Change Your Price

    Two houses on the same street can be $750 apart on the same charger. Here is why.

    Distance from the panel

    This is the single largest variable. Every foot adds copper, conduit, straps and labor. A charger mounted on the other side of the wall from the panel is a fraction of the cost of one at the far end of a long driveway, even though the finished result looks identical.

    Whether the panel has room

    A panel with two open spaces and headroom on the load calculation is a straightforward job. A full panel needs a tandem breaker arrangement, a subpanel, or a service upgrade. This is the difference between a $750 job and a $5,600 job, so it is worth confirming early.

    Indoor, outdoor or underground

    Indoor and outdoor runs are the same flat rate per foot — weatherproof conduit on an exterior wall costs no more than a run through an interior wall or attic. Trenching to a detached garage is a different story: excavation, PVC conduit, sweeps and backfill make underground the most expensive path per foot by a wide margin.

    40 amp versus 48 amp

    Stepping from a 40A circuit to a 60A circuit means heavier conductors and a larger breaker. On a 15-foot run the difference is minor. On an 80-foot run it is substantial, and most drivers never notice the extra charging speed overnight.

    The permit and inspection

    A permitted install protects your homeowner's insurance, and your resale disclosure. Any quote that is cheap because it skips the permit is not actually cheaper.

    What the wall is made of

    Drywall and wood framing are easy. Plaster and lath, stucco, brick and finished garage ceilings all add time. Older San Fernando Valley homes frequently need a little extra patching, and an honest estimate accounts for it up front.

    Which agency issues your permit

    A 240V EV charging circuit is a permitted electrical installation under NEC Article 625. Which counter it goes through depends on your jurisdiction, and Los Angeles is a patchwork.

    When a panel upgrade is genuinely required

    Panel size alone does not decide this. A load calculation under NEC Article 220 does. Plenty of 200A panels in Sherman Oaks and Encino take a 48A charger with no changes at all, and plenty of 100A panels in older Van Nuys and North Hollywood homes can still support a 32A or 40A charger once the actual demand load is calculated.

    An upgrade is genuinely required when the calculated load exceeds the service rating, when the panel is physically full with no room for a two-pole breaker, or when the existing equipment is a Zinsco, Federal Pacific or Challenger panel that should be replaced regardless of the charger. In borderline cases there is often a middle path: a load management device that pauses charging when the house draws heavily, which is far less expensive than a full service upgrade.

    Why the cheapest quote is often the most expensive

    The low bids in Los Angeles usually skip something specific: the permit, the load calculation, correctly sized conductors, or a proper weatherproof exterior run. Ask any contractor to put the permit number and the conductor size in writing on the estimate. A licensed C10 will do that without hesitating.

    Most Los Angeles homes land between $1,000 and $2,000 for a fully permitted Level 2 installation when the existing panel has spare capacity. LED Guys charges $60 per foot for the wire run — the same rate whether the conduit goes through an interior wall, an attic, or along an exterior wall. A short run beside the panel is $950 to $1,350; a typical 10 to 25 foot attached-garage run is $1,600 to $2,000. Longer runs over 50 feet run $4,000 to $5,000 and up. Underground trenching to a detached garage costs more and varies by distance and site conditions. If the panel needs a 200 amp upgrade first, add $4,375 to $6,875 including the permit.
    Yes. A 240V branch circuit for EV supply equipment requires an electrical permit and a final inspection. Inside the City of Los Angeles that permit comes from LADBS.     Not always, and the panel label does not answer the question. An NEC Article 220 load calculation does. Many 200A panels take a 48A charger with no changes.     For most drivers, no. A 40A circuit delivers roughly 30 miles of range per hour of charging, which refills an average daily commute several times over during an overnight charge. A 48A circuit needs heavier conductors, a 60A breaker and, on longer runs, meaningfully more material. It earns its cost for large-battery trucks and SUVs, two-EV households sharing one charger, or drivers who regularly need a fast turnaround between trips.
    Most residential installations finish in three to five hours in a single visit. Runs that require trenching to a detached garage or a new subpanel usually take a full day. If a service panel upgrade is part of the scope, plan on one full day for the panel plus coordination with LADWP for the meter release.
    Often yes, though it depends on where the panel is and whether the parking space can be reached. California law gives owners and renters meaningful rights to install EV charging, but the practical work involves the HOA, the metering arrangement and sometimes a dedicated meter.
