Multi-wire branch circuits (MWBC) — two hot conductors sharing a neutral — are common in commercial wiring but require a handle-tie or two-pole breaker to ensure both conductors open simultaneously during maintenance. Improperly installed MWBCs create a shock hazard for electricians servicing the circuit. NEC 210.4(B) mandates simultaneous disconnection for all conductors of an MWBC.
Metal raceways, equipment enclosures, and motor frames require a continuous equipment grounding conductor connecting back to the panel's grounding bus. Missing or improperly bonded equipment grounding creates shock hazard and prevents the overcurrent device from clearing a ground fault. This is particularly common in older commercial buildings where equipment has been added or relocated without pulling a proper ground.
NEC 408.4 requires that every circuit breaker in a panel be legibly identified as to its purpose or the equipment it serves.
